So what is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?
Your CBT Therapist will help you to identify and change the thoughts, feelings and behaviours that cause distress and make it difficult for you to achieve life goals. You will then be supported to implement tried and tested techniques and interventions that will disrupt the maintaining features of the problem.
CBT is the most highly recommended psychotherapy for most common mental health issues. Please visit the National Institute of Clinical Excellence website for the latest guidance about the issue you're experiencing.
CBT offers a short term therapy solution (usually from 6-20 sessions) and this makes it appealing because its benefits can be felt more quickly and last longer compared to other treatments.
GetCBT offers face to face appointments in our Wirral clinic and online, Internationally.

Did you know that Cognitive Therapy is different to Behavioural Therapy?
Cognitive Therapy focuses on your thoughts and how they can become altered and more rigid when you are feeling bad. Changing how your think makes it easier to change how you manage, cope and behave which will in turn help you to feel better.
Behavioural Therapy is based on learning theory and helps us to exercise more control of our own behvaviours and use them to overcome unwanted feelings and achieve our most regarded values. In turn, we start to view what we once considered obstacles and how to approach them, differently.
A good CBT Therapist uses each approach specifically to meet your needs.
Watch a BABCP short animation about CBT or visit the GetCBT Blog which looks at specific problems and treatment approaches we offer.
When you are ready to find your Private CBT Therapist then don’t hesitate to get in touch.
GetCBT also offers Private “Third wave” CBT treatments such as:
These treatments are gaining traction from a strong emerging evidence base and the ease of integration with existing CBT therapies.
Third wave CBT treatments can be effective for clients experiencing issues considered 'hard to treat' or 'treatment resistant'.
Want to know more?
Third wave therapies can be complimentary to traditional CBT approaches, but go beyond the focus of the content of a person's thoughts and internal experiences in order to reduce or eliminate unwanted symptoms (such as difficult emotions).
Instead, the focus is on the context, processes, and functions of how a person relates to internal experiences (i.e., thoughts, urges, sensations). And often, in pursuit of this goal, the reduction or elimination of symptoms is a side benefit.
Concepts such as metacognition, acceptance, mindfulness and personal values can be used alongside traditional CBT interventions which can increase psychological flexibility and resilience.
When offered as a standalone treatment, ACT and CFT offer a different approach which can be effective for those who have already tried CBT. When used in combination, these interventions can improve motivation, understanding and approach making CBT more successful.

Your first appointment will be an assessment. During the assessment I will ask you questions to help me understand the main problems you are experiencing and to determine if CBT could help you. I will ask you to describe your difficulties and how they are impacting on your life. I will also ask you about what triggered the problems and if there have been any events in your life which you think might have contributed to how you are feeling now. It will help to know about any other treatments or therapies you have tried, and what you hope to achieve.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy typically takes between 6-20 sessions. The number of sessions you need will depend on the type of difficulties you are experiencing and how long you have had the problem. I will be able to give you an estimate following assessment.
First of all, I want to put you at ease so if there is anything you think I can do to help with this, let me know.
Before you come, it will also be helpful if you try to have a think about the main difficulties you want to work on. It can also help to come with a few ideas about what you hope to achieve from therapy, how life might be different.
When you attend for your assessment appointment, it is useful to bring with you the details of any medication that you take.
Yes. Research has shown us that the outcomes of online CBT are comparable to face to face treatment. Many people find them more convenient to attend and as we can still see each other, we can still connect.
If you decide to try remote therapy appointments, please ensure that you have a safe, quiet and private space in which to have the appointment. We will treat this like any face-to-face appointment so it is important that we both ensure that there are no interruptions. Although it can be tempting when sitting at home, it is also important not to multi-task during the appointment.
CBT appointments are quite structured and combine the information you bring (as you are your own expert) and the evidence based interventions that I will support you with.
In all your appointments (after the assessment), we will start by agreeing what would be useful to do in the session. We typically begin by reviewing your week and end by planning for the following week. The main focus of the session will depend on the problems you want to address.
You will notice that the first phase of treatment is focused on information gathering and working together to really understand the issue you're facing. The second phase involves us working together to overcome the issues. The final phase will be about preparing you to end your treatment and make sure that you have a plan for the future.
My aim is to provide you with evidence based therapy. This means that the treatment is supported by evidence showing that it works and as such, is recommended by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence. As such, my core intervention is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
I also have training in ACT, Mindfulness and CfT which allows me to draw upon additional resources to support you as and when needed. These interventions are really useful for improving self awareness, psychological flexibility, distress tolerance and developing a more compassionate frame of mind.
